ST Nov 17, 2008I thought this was quite funny. Considering that it takes at most 2 hours to drive from one end of Singapore to the other end, it seems practically impossible for Singapore to lose this kind of competition to the likes of the United States or Britain.
150 YEARS OF SERVICE
Reinvention delivers success to SingPost
New technology and fresh ideas have helped it stay on top
By Grace Chua
SINGAPORE'S flagship postal service marks its 150th year as an independent organisation this year, but the grand old dame has more than just longevity to celebrate.
Last year, Singapore Post (SingPost) won the prestigious World Mail Award for the quality of its mail services, in which at least 98per cent of mail posted is delivered by the next day.
It pipped seven other postal services, including those from the United States, Britain, Germany and Spain, for the award.

“...The maximum time to reach any corner of Singapore is 20 minutes as traffic is not allowed to flood the roads,”
i can't believe they bestowed the award anyway, wotever possessed them to do that? have they even been to singapore? it's unfair advantage.
Hi Mr Wang,
This is not exactly related to your post but I like your choice of picture for this post. =)
The sumo wrestler's name is Konishiki, formerly from Hawaii and has already retired from the dohyo for some time. (In case you don't know.)
It's just like Singapore organizations to be so self-congratulatory.
Clap clap, another pat on the back, old chum.
They are starved of awards.
When you are starving, anything that looks like food you will also eat.
I thought some old man said that with our world class road transportation system, we can reach any place within 20 minutes.
It's like awarding the PAP govt as the most capable and talented in the world since they are paid many times more than other leaders in the world.
But how long does it take the other 2% to be delivered?
Some of them gets half-delivered. If you ever sent mail that gets slit open with its contents removed on its way to the recipient, you will know what I mean.
And no, there was nothing valuable in the envelope. Perplexing.
That mail got (half-)delivered late BTW.
Exctly. Not a fair comparison. The award should have been segmented by the coverage of the postal service. It is grossly misleading to compare the postal service of a small nation compared to a large one. Like your choice of photo to illustrate your point.

Nothing beats winning "Best Passenger Experience"....by S(tanding)MRT
Heh@anonymous. I got one of those delayed half-delivered items before. I wonder what the people who did it must have thought when they slit it open only to find feminine hygiene products.
Wang, I thinking, as you point out SingPost got no competition and got super efficient traffic situation. Then hor, why SingPost is not become big like FedEx, DHL, even before FedEx and DHL?
They have all the monopoly advantage what!
“...can reach any place in 20 minutes"
“...The maximum time to reach any corner of Singapore is 20 minutes as traffic is not allowed to flood the roads,”
I live in Sembawang and study at Tampines. Even by cab it takes 40 minutes to get there.
How come the gov never congratulate themselves for having DBS the largest Scam Bomb issuer and seller ever conceived in this planet ?
How come the gov never congratulate themselves for having the largest Scam Bomb purchasers and losers (town council and GLC) in this planet ?
Another award should be issued to Singapore.
The most thick-skinned government in the world.
BTW, the award they won was something like 18 months ago....was not last year's award. In addition it seems to have nothing to do with the 98% delivery rate cited by ST. Here is the description of the award category:
The integrity of mail quality is increasingly important as networks become more competitive. This award is designed to highlight worthwhile initiatives that help the customer identify and recognise best practice in terms of delivering mail quality. The judges will be seeking clear evidence of examples of new products or initiatives that have enabled mail companies to introduce, enhance or deliver substantial mail quality improvement. Applications are invited from organisations of any size in any part of the world and the judges will recognise quality in the framework of the country from which the application has been submitted.
There's no real competition even in this small island. What else can we expect?
it reminds me of page three hundred and twenty nine of Ghost Train to the Eastern Star: On the Tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar:
Some time ago, on a rare trip to Paris, so a well-placed friend told me, Lee (Kuan Yew) was granted a meeting with François Mitterrand. Lee began lecturing the premier of France on governance. After Lee had left the room, Mitterrand said, “Who is this ridiculous man who wastes my time? Running Singapore is like running Marseilles. I am running a whole country!”
Hmmm. But we are fortunate that the postage is only a mere 26 cents! A glass of water is already 30 cents i the coffee shop and the bus fares is already 71 cents!
