A Tale of One Jack Chick and Two Religions

This is going to be quite an interesting case to watch. Since details are not yet available, I'm posting the article below mainly for future reference.

ST April 15, 2008
Couple charged under Sedition Act
By Elena Chong

A COUPLE were charged on Tuesday with distributing a seditious publication to two others.

Ong Kian Cheong, 49, and Dorothy Chan Hien Leng, 44, are alleged to have distributed The Little Bride, an evangelistic material, to Sembawang resident Irwan Ariffin last Oct 19.

They are also said to have distributed the same publication to one Madam Farharti Ahmad at her home in Woodlands on March 6 last year .

It is not clear why they face the Sedition Act and the Undesirable Publication Act when the publication is the same.

Ong, who works in a telecommunications company, and his wife, a bank employee, were represented by Mr Selva K. Naidu.

The police prosecutor sought an adjournment of the case pending a Health Sciences Authority on handwriting specimen.

The couple were freed on $10,000 bail each. Their passports were impounded.

The case will be mentioned on April 29.

Under the Sedition Act, the maximum penalty is a $5,000 fine and/or a jail term of up to three years.

The maximum penalty under the Undesirable Publication Act is a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up to 12 months.

I had not heard of "The Little Bride" before, so I got curious and decided to google to find out more. After a quick bit of Internet searching, I've found out that it is a evangelical cartoon/comic series produced by an American named Jack Chick, who has a reputation of being very controversial.

Direct access to Jack Chick's official website has been blocked by the Media Development Authority. However, if you google around, you can see some of Jack Chick's works on other websites / blogs. I'm not supplying the links.

I have to say that if I were a Muslim, I would probably be very, very offended by some of these works.

However, at the same time, I am wondering how the Christian community in Singapore would react to the prosecution of Ong Kian Cheong and Dorothy Chan. These two individuals probably saw themselves as faithfully and courageously seeking to spread the word of God (the Christian God, I mean).

This could be a very complex, challenging case for the prosecution, if the accused persons claim trial. Ahh, times like this, I almost wish I was still a Deputy Public Prosecutor.

P.S I am, by the way, neither Christian nor Muslim.

P.S.S Readers who wish to post any comments on this post, please avoid using inflammatory or religiously offensive language.

No sympathy for those two.

They must have been seriously out of their mind to distribute something as controversial as that.

Distributing The Little Bride is essentially condemning other religions

Anonymous said...

In case you are not aware, Christianity unequivocally condemns other religions. It's the Bible - not Christians, that condemns these other religions. The issue really is not condemnation or offense - its TRUTH. If you actually read The Little Bride and cross reference the claims it makes - you will find that the claims are offensive but TRUE.
You can easily find a searchable Hadith online and find if the claims made about Mohammed by the Muslim tradition are as reported in The Little Bride.

These 2 are just the kar kiahs. (subordinates)

The authorities should deal directly with (prosecute) the ring-leader.

Just like if you want to stamp out drug-dealing, you need to get to the ultimate source.

Like American Gangster, you need to get to Denzel Washington and the other corrupts.

Who's supplying these 2 with Jack Chick comics?

Oh, I don't think I'd go quite so far as to call Jack Chick 'controversial', Mr. Wang. That would be to give his views far more credit than they're worth. The man's no more than yet another Evangelist Christian bible basher engaged in the time-honoured tradition of parting the pious and guilt-ridden from their money. He'll save your soul for money, in other words, just like countless scam artistes before him (Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart, Tammy Faye Baker, ad nauseum). Unsurprisingly, his site is anti every other religion but his own. Slick shopping cart for your purchases too.

His hook is to present his wares in the form of illustrated comics, rather like Jap Manga without the style. In the case of the tract in question, it's the usual puerile Jesus vs Mohammed, Christianity vs Islam silliness - and guess who wins? You'd need to be a pretty low-watt bulb to even read The Little Angel without chuckling and promptly attaching it to a convenient nail in your bog, neatly torn to useful size of course. Unfortunately, I skimmed through it and rapidly lost my will to live, and I blame you for posting about it too.

No idea how sedition comes into the equation but I could see it as an undesirable publication from the point of view of children though. They tend to inhale comic books and in their innocence believe the rubbish being presented as fact. This particular product does use kids as protagonists in the argument. No sane adult ought to be bothered in the slightest.

Still, I would have thought a stern warning to Ong And Chan to cease and desist would be perfectly adequate, instead this looks like overkill by the MDA. But a little extra salt rubbed into the wound never hurts, does it?

Now, you want controversial, Pat Condell is controversial with a dry humour, I think. I'll leave it up to your sensitive legal antennae to decide whether it's suitable for your blog.

Disclaimer: Like you, I'm neither Christian nor Muslim.

Cheers.

Mr Wang;
thank you for highlighting this case, otherwise, I may not be aware of it.

Frankly, I am interested in this case. Though an atheist, I am impartial to believers. Whichever god they believe in, are all gods, quite like you and me are humans.

Why one believer has to convert another believer always intrique me. I simply cannot believe anyone(of any religion) wanting to share goodness by (wanting to) converting others.

I just took a look at it, and amongst other things, there is a comment that could be construed as being disrespectful of the Singapore flag. The rest of it is pretty hot stuff and I can see why they might be prosecuted for distributing it.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more evangelistical churches in Singapore were moved to defend these two. However, if the accused and the churches themselves have any political nous at all, they should realise that this particular Chick tract (and, to be honest, most or all of the Chick output) isn't suited to the political and religious situation in Singapore and ought not be distributed there.

Anonymous said...

I just feel if some religions find it ok to critique other religions, then they must be magnanimous enough to be critiqued by others as well. Isn't religion basically a belief. You can question others, why can't others question yours? But to condemn the other as being untrue while propagating your own as the ultimate right is also wrong.

Anonymous said...

So Mr Wang, it is not alright for them to "spread the word" to Muslims, but it is alright for people of the same mind to slip these material into targetted homes displaying other religious worship?

It is a very difficult situation, I must admit for the authorities. But evangelism is a dangerous thing in multicultural Singapore.

The tensions have been seething for too long. It is time we address this again. Stop telling me what I believe is wrong, if you refuse to let me tell you what you believe is wrong.

Anonymous said...

At least Little Bride booklet did not quote the part about prophet's terroristic violence towards Kafirs, how to kill or subdue, etc.

At least it mention love of God.

Not so seditious what.

Anonymous said...

"No sympathy for those two.

But that is precisely the problem with right wing believers of any religion for that matter. They will feel that they are being persecuted and become even more right wing! LOL

The evangelistic churches in Singapore won't be stupid enough to defend this two scape goats. They know better when not to put on knuckle dusters.

Anonymous said...

I thought they sell it at the Christian bookshops in Bras Basah.

I don't agree with their teachings, but they should not be persecuted. This is the basic freedom of expression unless they are strongly imposing upon the receipients of the tracts.

Anonymous said...

Terrorists in Singapore are corrected of their extreme ways by main-stream religious teachers.

Perhaps these 2 should be subjected to the same. Let the more main-stream Christian teachers teach these 2 the errors of their ways from the bible itself.

So who's more TRUE?

Muslims extremists who claim believers of other faiths ought to be wiped off in accordance with the 'TRUTH' in the Koran, or people like you who believe the claims in The Little Bride, when cross-referenced with the Bible, are "offensive but TRUE?"

Is there any difference between your kind of thinking and a terrorist?

This is Chris again. I looked at the Chick Tract website yesterday, and saw the online copy of the tract in all its silliness. Well, for my own blog entry today I went to the Chick site to refresh my memory, and it seems to have been removed! The link to it remains, but when clicked you get some code errors.

I wonder if this has anything to do with this Singapore news story!

Mr Wang, it has been fairly uncomfortable for the last decade since the subtle, evenly blatantly militant stance of the evangelists groups have taken root in our homeland.

I do not mind what everyone wants to believe in. But it is not correct to try to force your believe through marketing of all sorts. Now we even see not so subtle sponsoring of TV programmes to institute praying to certain religion is good through TV series' plots.

Only the Muslims dared stand up to them. The rest of us, even when offended largely let them off. Because we are supposed to be a peaceful forgiving society.

I think they are overstepping this time. They tested the limits of society too much.

If the Government even realises the ground tension, they should just clamp down on the leaders of these militant, fundamentalist groups.

If I remember the Bible correctly, Jesus was said to have been enraged by the ratbag scallywag merchants blatantly flogging their warez in the temple grounds and he drove them forth with the jawbone of an ass (that last bit might be wrong).

It's strange that, today, with vast information resources available to anyone who cares to look, the faithful still do not make the connection between those cheeky opportunists of old and the likes of Chicko and his merry band.

@Chris:

Regrettably, Jack Schitt's site is perfectly accessible outside of S'pore. You could use a third party to check its availability from your end if you want to. Instructions may be found here.

If the DNS ping reports no problems and you still cannot get to it, then it must be as Wang says: Nanny doesn't think you're grown-up enough to look at 'sensitive' material and make up your own mind.

Never mind, you can still enjoy that special evangelical buzz at [YouTube - Joseph Prince at Hillsong Conference 2007].

Which is nice.

I wonder if it's a case of self-indoctrination. If so, it underlines PM Lee's point of the danger of the net. And his speech was timely, coming almost in tandem with this case.

The solution is of course to allow this couple free "undoctrination" courses and seminars, much like "anger management" courses for some criminal offenders in US who do certain misdemeanours out of anger mismanagement. Reminds me of the movie, LOL.

Naturally, to place more restrictions to the net because of such instances is defintely not the way to go. What is needed is even better and clearer information, freely available on the net. Also courses can be given on how to read information critically. Although that would probably blow most ST articles out of the water. Oops.

Blogter said...

"If the Government even realises the ground tension, they should just clamp down on the leaders of these militant, fundamentalist groups."

This may trigger even more problems, as the religous groups in question would feel even more persecuted and cornered. This could be what is stopping the authorities from taking sterner action.

What is surely needed is more information made available to people to make more rational decisions. And perhaps more ex-fundys to stand up and testify about their past experiences.

To take the positive approach, is not to clamp down anything or any persons, but to open up even more discussions between the indoctrinated and those who have been liberated.

As usual, what is needed is more information to counter or supplement insufficient information.

"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
--> Great knowledge would be a great and safe thing.

In this information age, the only way to go is forward, not backwards.

Anonymous said...

to the anonymous who actually say it's the TRUTH, well it's a very subjective belief. In fact, religion are believed nt by facts but by faith. I believe in respecting everyone's beliefs and we should really do that. You can read up on Ottoman Empire, it's a very good example.

It's nt really nice to keep condemning other religion though.

back to the topic, the couples really should have known better. Hope it serves as a warning to them and the judge will be lenient as they're 1st offenders.

Anonymous said...

"perhaps more ex-fundys to stand up and testify about their past experiences.

... open up even more discussions between the indoctrinated and those who have been liberated."

This will be like a huge "tit for tat" argument in public. For very strong faith based religions, critique has almost never been accepted. For "aposoltes" to speak out against or for information, further discredits these guys who stand up.

"They are not of the faith, they do not understand, let us forgive them"

Talk and discussions are only for when you are not so indoctrinated to the state of obssession. These groups are now feeding upon their own faith, they have become greater obssessed and believe so deeply, any bit of talk infuriates them.

The fact remains that they have cumulated many experiences to deal with talk. They know how to shower empathy on members who have just been snubbed, and encourage them to become more aggressive.

Our Government has been successful in plurging the JI by arresting leaders. These are similiar groups operating on softer approach destructive manners to society. Why not use the same methods of re-education on them? Arrest their leaders and tell them to keep their faith to those who come to them. Don't go insulting or making people unhappy in a plural society. We don't want to upset you, so please don't come upset us.

Mr Wang, these groups are also border on "corruption". Why? Because they use their religious congregatio netwrok to get jobs for members.

Especially high level jobs. Which is not right. There is a huge grey area between "social responsibilities" and "personal favours".

"Members only" job referals and hires, is something which is not criminal, but remains highly undesirable. And they use it to propagate themselves, and entrench themselves into our society's influencial and higher orders. This, is where the grey becomes a black.

Anonymous said...

You know, I don't care or mind them. But they are doin certain things, which they think is in order of their "calling".

Newspapers and magazines purposely use the cross sign to substitute as plus. And they hide it by saying it is "fashion". Ya. I put swastika as "t" also fashion.

And the worst is the TV. In Chinese serials, when the character say "Thank heavens" or "Pray to Buddha" or "Pray to heavens", the English wording come out is substitute the "heavens" and "Buddha" to "GOD". WTF. Can don't come tell me "God" is universal anot? the universal word is have no capital one, call "god" even "gods". And in ancient China, nobody pray to "God". At least stick to the context!

Anonymous said...

"And in Ancient China, nobody pray to god", unquote.

You are very right Sir, I do not know what is wrong with the Chinese(in China) in the past. The Chinese was one Ancient Race that only paid respects to their ancesters and was religion free. But somehow they got brainwashed to believe in Religions by aliens and their foundation in wisdoms got adulterated by foreign myth and superstition.

Luckily, many in the mainland are back to paying respects to their ancestors. A ritual definitely worth reviving as ones' ancesters are the forefathers that made us into this World and brought us up. We have to be grateful for the upbringings.

I am impartial to religions and their believers, only if they do not encroach onto others.

And just to make a personal call to the Chinese Race; let us go back to Ancestor(deceased human/not man made, make believe entity) Worship(pay respects) and dump all the myth and superstition.

The Chinese worships of Justice Pao(Paokong) Kuan Yu(Kuankong), Qu Yuan and Kong Ze(Confucius) are Ancestor Worships to pay respects to their outstanding spirits in humanities. It is not superstition, but to remember some great historical forebears.

Healthy interest and respect ok, but worship crosses the line for me. Especially if it involves polluting the air by burning paper or joss sticks. Or even prostrating before metal or wooden figurines.

Hi Blogter;
like You, I am an atheist and an atheist since young. I am unable to understand much of the rituals involved in worships by the different Faiths, including those practised by Ancestor Worshippers.

In Bhuddist and Chinese Ancestor Worship Rituals, the Processes are solemn and other than joss sticks and candles, hardly much of other offerings are used. The unfortunate thing about believing is that when believers become superstitious and get mixed up, they get lost.

The Chinese Race has one silly aspect that does not tally with their long historical standings. In South East Asian Region especially, the Chinese tends to worship multi-gods from different Religions. In their greedy wish to be bestowed with good luck and health, the Chinese worship Indian, Malay, Christian and all kinds of deities.

Some Chinese also worship every deities not out of respects but because of fears, fears of offending deities because of their superstitions. Foolish as they maybe, it happens and it is our responsibility to enlighten them when we can.

Ancestor Worships require a place(building) for gathering and a semblance of the Ancestor(photographs for the modern man and figurines for the ancient ones). A solemn recitation of history and the deeds of the ancestors would make the ceremony/ritual serious and grand.
Some joss sticks and candles would enhance the celebrations and lend them some colours and gaiety. It should never be the offerings of earthly imitations of money and material, that's pure superstions.

As mankind has taken to religions for thousand of years, the latter has gotten too complex for elaboration and even comprehension.

As a Chinese, I know Ancestor Worships was the Original and only Worship Ancient Chinese practised. During Communist Rule, the Mainland Chinese reverted to non religion again. And now that many are again back to Ancestor Worships, I personally hope that the Chinese Race will do the ceremonies without superstitious practices.

Yours sincerely;

Quite apart from most of the commenters here, I'm wondering why they're not being restrained under the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (Cap. 167A). Then again, maybe that's too large a hammer. Or, oops, lightning-bolt.

Anonymous said...

Frankly, we have to pity the muslims. Those who wish out cannot get out, for we all know that their religion prohibits defaction. They get ostracised socially even by their relatives and friends for leaving islam.

Then again, if non-muslims are prohibited from questioning islam (which by the way is producing the MOST terrorists today amongst all other religions), and muslims themselves are prohibited from questioning islam, while at the same time, islam is passed down from generation to generation without question.

Then what we have on our hands is a religion that is festering hatred against non-muslims and everyone is strictly told to STAY CLEAR!.

Well, so much for sensibility. If muslims feel that they are getting insulted when others fault their faith, they should really look deep down inside themselves when they go around telling others that Jesus is not God cos the Christian faith is based on that foundation - that Jesus is God.

So, we have a religion that has its faith based on trouncing another religion and its all written in black and white in their hadiths and qurans and yet the other faiths are prohibited from counter-challenging.

I mean I can understand why it is easier to arrest the milder religion than to offend the one that is producing terrorism.

It all boils down to having the BALLS to stand up for the truth.

Hi Patriot,

Perhaps you can consider changing to deep meditation by chanting "Oom" or something else. For the more musical, they can compose songs to honour their ancestors. Like the Buddhists and Christians nowadays are banging away on their rock bands.

Excuse my bluntness, but I can imagine it quite a headache to live in your so-called UN family?

Hi!

I googled this issue and landed on your website. Not suprising to me, some of the comments made regarding this issue gets read with a closed eye and passed of as the truth without substantial evidence or reference.

Here is a link to one of the (other)most read blogger in Singapore and his comments on this matter. PLUS, he actually responded to the issue with evidence and reference.

http://muhammad-ridzwan.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Little%20Bride

In any case, I do not think that this issue needs to be defended by Muslims nor Christians, the 2 who got charged do not represent the Christian Community nor do what they spread in the pamphlet an accurate reflection of what Islam is.

2 Christians detained under the Publications Act, 51 Muslims detained without question under ISA, Muslims parking their cars blocking roads during Fridays, Christians sending youth groups to preach on converting to Islam.
whats the difference brothers?

we are all NOT extremists so do not let the uninformed, unworthy and misrepresentation affect this great multireligious country that is singapore.

peace!

"telling others that Jesus is not God cos the Christian faith is based on that foundation - that Jesus is God."

That is exactly where "milder" evangelistic Christianity got into conflict with practically every religion there is.

Like the orginal "Christians", Catholics, to whom Jesus is the son of God. Not God.

Anonymous said...

The news article suggests that the couple actually approached the targets at their homes. Whether they have met physically or they just dropped the publications at the doorsteps, or whether they have targetted non-Muslims as well (using the same or some different tract) is yet to be known.

If they have actually met up with the targets and insisted on passing them the stuff despite their objection, I say they will most certainly be convicted of something. If there was no meet-up, then it will depend on the legality of distributing religious advertisements (and a very aggressive kind) at private places, for the sedition charge anyway.

I don’t see why some pple have compared it to the DaVinci code and claiming a case of double standards, when the seditious nature of the incident is more to do with couple’s direct (going to pple’s homes) and aggressive (using overtly offensive material) evangelistic intentions (which are therefore likely to be inappropriate), and not so much or solely the content of the book. Of course it doesn’t help that the book is so fundie that one can associate it with seditious purposes without much difficulty.

The choice of words in the news article may be misleading as well: casting something in negative light isn’t anything quite like an unrestrained and outright assertive attack, at least that is what I gauge after I have seen and read that comic.

Am a Christian.

Heard about The Little Bride materials from a fellow Christian whom received those materials in his home as well.

I have to firmly agree with the first anonymous comment - No sympathy for them.

Keeping the faith apparently necessitates 'spreading the gospel' but it does not entail the explicit condemnation of other faiths. While it appears that most Christians categorically reject other religions, I would suggest that in modern times (especially in what the govt terms potentially sensitive areas) perhaps this should be more implicit, though I would run the risk of sounding hypocritical.

But isn't this what having a religion mostly requests of you? The belief in one faith, and the consequent rejection of other things, because they are seen to be either paganistic or secular. It's the same for all other religions - look at Jainism, Islam and even Buddhism. They all deny self and the world (and by extension all other religions).

Maybe it's this fundamental characteristic of religion that propels such conflicts. It's an underlying tension that has been simmering for centuries I think?

Anonymous said...

my comment may seem expired for this article. But I just chance upon MrWang's blog.

I'm christian. And after reading the entry, i did a search on The Little Bride.

here's my thought:

- What was mention as in the fundamentals of Christianity is true.

It definitely is very controversial to make a stand if that particular online material i read isn't wrong.

This issue reminded me of my 2 weeks stay in NYC. When I was there I met some friends of my friend; immigrants from china, m'sia, japan. They asked me how singapore is like, can anyone declare in media that one religion is better than the other. I said "no, we could share our faith, preach what we believe but not to say ours is real and ur's is fake, we could be jailed for that" And immediately they said they dislike singapore.

I can see why, to them they have stayed in states many years, and so absorbed into human rights and freedom. They are allowed to do that in states. So standing in the view of the author of Jack chick, he isn't wrong.

BUT this is Singapore, not Canada nor States. This is a fact we cannot deny or be idealist that there will be true democracy and freedom of true human rights here. So people should abide the rules where they are in.

I'm singaporean too. *haiz
I can't explain why i just sighed.

Frankly Jack Chick is really awful. For your information, he writes these tracts based on misinformation about every other religion, including Catholicism. He spreads, inter alia, the following:

The Catholic Church keeps "the name of every Protestant church member in the world" in a "big computer" in the Vatican for use in future persecutions.

But the conspiracy is much broader than this, and it has been going on for a very long time. In the sixth century, for instance, Catholic leaders manipulated the Arabian tribesman Mohammed into creating the religion of Islam to use as a weapon against the Jews and to conquer Jerusalem for the pope

The Jesuits instigated the American Civil War, supporting the Confederate cause and seeking to undermine the Union. When they failed, they arranged the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.[3] Later, they formed the Ku Klux Klan.[4]

The Nazi Holocaust of the 1940s was a Vatican-controlled attempt to exterminate Jews and heretics. Further, "Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco were backed by the Vatican for the purpose of setting up a one-world government to usher in the ‘Millennial Kingdom’ under Pope Pius XII.

The Vatican conspiracy is so extensive that, through the Jesuits, Rome controls the Illuminati, the Council on Foreign Relations, international bankers, the Mafia, the Club of Rome, the Masons, and the New Age movement.

The Jesuits created the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, Unity, Christian Science, and other religious groups.

"Pope John Paul II has been a good Communist for many years" and engineered a phony assassination attempt against himself in 1981 to shame Islam into warming relations with the Vatican, since the would-be killer was a Muslim.

(source: http://www.catholic.com/library/sr_chick_tracts_p1.asp)

All these conspiracy theories and misinformation preached as the gospel truth. Despicable. Surely one should be allowed to decide his/her religion (whether Islam or other faiths) based on substantiated facts and not lies fabricated by some dude in the US.

Today's papers said that these people distribute the tracts without knowing the contents. I refuse to believe that. It only takes 3 mins to browse through the entire thing (and they are well-educated leh). Lying is a sin too..
