Singapore Writers Festival

Hey, look who's right over here. Me.

Okay, that is not really the point. The point is that the Singapore Writers Festival is coming up soon - in the last week of October (from the 22nd to the 30th), and there will be many interesting events for those of you who like to write, as well as those of you who like to read.

The writers participating in the Singapore Writers Festival include the usual suspects from the local scene (Catherine Lim, Alfian Sa'at, Ho Minfong, Edwin Thumboo, Toh Hsien Min, Dave Chua and SuChen Christine Lim, to name a few). And there is also a generous dose of foreign authors including Francis Lelord, Joe Haldeman and Steven Levitt.

Stephen Levitt, author of Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics.

The Singapore Writers Festival includes events such as lectures, writing workshops, panel discussions, meet-the-author sessions, book launches and more. For full details, visit the SWF official website.

Mr Wang,

Talking about socio-political blogs and matters, besides you and Catherine Lim that I know of, any other local bloggers, authors or even politician blogger/authors you know of who are also participating?

Like the well known Dr Chee Soon Juan? I think he wrote a couple of books, all socio-political and made a living by selling his books. Or Teo Soh Lung, ex ISA detainee and recent author?

To me, such personalities and their presence, is what I considered interesting events in the Singapore context.

Errrr, I think ex-NMP Simon Tay is featured somewhere. Also Fong Hoe Fang, the publisher of Teo Soh Lung's book.

Writing must make a lot of $. I know someone who writes and sells his works exclusively in the underground. Through a 5 yr period this fellow earned enough to buy large tracts of farming land all around the world. A few publishing houses approached him, he got angry with them as they were only willing to pay him pittance and I believe they wanted to correct his grammar and Ellington mistakes. He called them leeches. What I cannot figure out is how he manage to turn all those monopoly $ into real world money. No tax. No middleman.

I am wondering Mr Wang is this a good model. I also want to go into writing.

JK Rowling of Harry Potter fame became a billionaire through her writings.

In Singapore, I don't think one can even earn a living by writing, let alone become a millionaire.

But maybe there is an exception. I am talking about journalists from the mainstream media. I think they are paid relatively well in their job.

And outstanding ones even stood on on PAP ticket in elections.

I definitely don't make much money from writing ..... For me, it's more about personal satisfaction, enjoying a hobby and so on.....
